Boeren-Leidse is one of the few Dutch cheeses with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). In the vicinity of Leiden, butter production for the capital used to be hard at work. The skimmed cheeses that were actually a residual product enjoyed little popularity until cumin from the East became available.
